In 1851, a battalion of Indian fighters wandered into Yosemite Valley and were stopped in their tracks, dumbstruck, by the view. They were the first nonnatives to see this landscape, but their descriptions of it ensured they would not be the last. One man later wrote, "None but those who have visited this most wonderful valley can even imagine . . . the awe with which I beheld it. . . . As I looked, a peculiar exalted sensation seemed to fill my whole being, and I found my eyes in tears with emotion."

Yosemite Valley is today the centerpiece of California's Yosemite National Park. Sprayed by thousand-foot waterfalls and framed by monumental granite spires — including Half Dome, which is to the High Sierra what the swoosh is to Nike — it is the most famous glacially carved landscape in the world. And perhaps the most famously overrun as well; stories are legion of peak-season traffic jams bad enough to provoke road rage and campgrounds so rife with noise, litter, and teeming masses of humans as to seem more like Times Square than the Great Outdoors.(...)

Do black holes really exist?

Black holes might not exist – or at least not as scientists have imagined, cloaked by an impenetrable "event horizon". A controversial new calculation could abolish the horizon, and so solve a troubling paradox in physics.

The event horizon is supposed to mark a boundary beyond which nothing can escape a black hole's gravity. According to the general theory of relativity, even light is trapped inside the horizon, and no information about what fell into the hole can ever escape. Information seems to have fallen out of the universe.

That contradicts the equations of quantum mechanics, which always preserve information. How to resolve this conflict? One possibility researchers have proposed in the past is that the information does leak back out again slowly. It may be encoded in a hypothetical flow of particles called Hawking radiation, which is thought to result from the black holes' event horizons messing with the quantum froth that is ever-present in space.(...)

Alexander Alexandrovich Alekhine (sometimes spelled "Aljechin or Alechin") (IPA: [alʲɛk'sandr̠ alʲɛk'sandr̠ovʲiʨ a'lʲɛxin]; other members of his family pronounce it [a'lʲɔxin]; Russian: Александр Александрович Алéхин; French: Alexandre Alekhine) (October 31 or November 1, 1892 – March 24, 1946) was a Russian-born naturalized French chess grandmaster (officially naturalized in 1927 only three days before the World Champion title), and the fourth World Chess Champion. He was known for his fierce and imaginative attacking style.

Early life
Alekhine was born into a wealthy family in Moscow, Russia. His father Alexander Ivanovich Alekhine was a landowner, and Privy Councillor to the conservative legislative Fourth Duma, according to Denker and Parr (The Bobby Fischer I Knew And Other Stories).[citation needed] His mother, Anisya Ivanovna Alekhina (née Prokhorova), was the daughter of a rich industrialist. Alekhine was first introduced to chess by his mother, an older brother Alexei, and an older sister Varvara.

Early chess career (1902-1914)
Alekhine's first known game was from a correspondence tournament that began on December 3, 1902. He participated in several correspondence chess tournaments, sponsored by Shakhmatnoe Obozrenie chess magazine, in 1902-1911. Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic and potentially debilitating autoimmune disease. While novel therapies have emerged in recent years, disease remission is rarely achieved. RA is a complex trait, and the identifying of its susceptibility and severity genes has been anticipated to generate new targets for therapeutic intervention. However, finding those genes and understanding their function has been a challenging task. Studies in rodent intercrosses and congenics generated from inbred strains have been an important complementary strategy to identify arthritis genes, and understand how they operate to regulate disease. Furthermore, these new rodent arthritis genes will be new targets for therapeutic interventions, and will identify new candidate genes or candidate pathways for association studies in RA. In this review-opinion article I discuss RA genetics, difficulties involved in gene identification, and how rodent models can facilitate (1) the discovery of both arthritis susceptibility and severity genes, (2) studies of gene–environment interactions, (3) studies of gene–gender interactions, (4) epistasis, (5) functional characterization of the specific genes, (6) development of novel therapies and (7) how the information generated from rodent studies will be useful to understanding and potentially treating RA.

A cryptography method for generating probabilistic digital signatures and/or for a key-exchange a protocol and/or for an encryption algorithm is based on the use of a public key algorithm on abnormal binary elliptic curve, such as a Koblitz curve. A point P (x, y) is selected, and pairs (k.sub.i, P.sub.i) are stored with P.sub.i being the point corresponding to the scalar multiplication of the point P by k.sub.i. A random variable (k) is generated and a point C is calculated that corresponds to the scalar multiplication of P by k. The generation of the random variable (k) and the calculation of the point C are performed simultaneously.

Boeing to unveil first 787 Sunday

EVERETT, Washington - More than a decade after its last all-new airliner took to the skies, Boeing Co. is poised to unveil the first of its prized 787s on Sunday. Airlines, leasing companies and other plane buyers have ordered more than 600 Dreamliners over the last few years, eager to hold Boeing to its promise that the midsize, long-haul jet will burn less fuel, be cheaper to maintain and offer more passenger comforts than comparable planes flying today. It will be the world's first large commercial airplane made mostly of carbon-fiber composites, which are lighter and more durable than aluminum. Final assembly of first 787 started in late May, after a gigantic, specially outfitted superfreighter started flying wings, fuselage sections and other major parts to Boeing's widebody plant, where they essentially get snapped together piece by huge piece. Once production hits full speed, the company each plane to spend just three days in final assembly, but this time Boeing workers spent several weeks installing electrical wiring and other innards that suppliers will eventually stuff into their sections of the plane before they're delivered to the assembly plant. Boeing decided to handle that work in-house for the first few planes rather than risk any production delays. Despite a few snags the company says it anticipated, including an industrywide shortage of airplane fasteners, Boeing officials say nothing so far has threatened to bump the 787 behind schedule.

Mitch Kapor’s Foxmarks To Leap Into Search World

Mitch Kapor likes to solve problems. In the 80's, he was the guy behind Lotus 1-2-3, the first killer app for computers. More recently he decided to tackle a a simpler problem - synchronizing Firefox bookmarks across multiple computers. His popular Firefox plugin, Foxmarks, has been downloaded 700,000 times and has 350,000 active users.

All those users create some very well organized bookmark data. Unlike Del.icio.us, where people throw thousands of bookmarks for later reference, users tend to have fewer, but more important, bookmarks linked directly from their browser. And they spend more time properly annotating those bookmarks, Kapor says. So far, Foxmarks is tracking 250 million bookmarks, from 20 million unique URLs.

And now Kapor, along with his partner, Todd Agulnick, are going to use that data to launch a new search engine. Expect it to debut in a few months.

The Foxmarks search engine is based entirely on user bookmarks and the associated metadata. Don't expect pages and pages of results like you get with Google. But you will get a few results for most queries that are highly relevant and on target. When returning and ranking results, Foxmarks takes into consideration the text in the title of the URL, the names of any folders people have put the bookmarks in, and any descriptions added by users. All of this information is shown in the results. See the very hazy screen shot below for the current user interface, which Kapor says will change before launch.(...)

Another useful tool has been developed for ET hunters, reports Roger Highfield. For the first time, researchers have successfully demonstrated in the laboratory that a space telescope rigged with special masks and mirrors could snap a photo of an Earth-like planet orbiting a nearby star. This accomplishment marks a step forward for missions like the proposed Terrestrial Planet Finder, designed to hunt for an Earth twin that might harbour alien life. Trying to see an exoplanet - a planet orbiting a star other than the sun - is a daunting task, because its relatively dim glow is easily overpowered by the intense glare of its much bigger, brighter parent star. The challenge has been compared to looking for a firefly next to a searchlight. Now, two researchers at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California, have shown that a fairly basic coronagraph - an instrument used to "mask" a star's glare - paired with an adjustable mirror, could enable a space telescope to image a distant planet 10 billion times fainter than its central star. Schluss mit der viel kritisierten Stichtagsregelung: Das empfiehlt der Nationale Ethikrat der Bundesregierung. Was für die Forschung mit embryonalen Stammzellen künftig gelten soll, darüber ist sich das scheidende Expertengremium völlig uneins. Sogar radikales Umdenken scheint möglich. Wie fundamental verschieden die Positionen im Nationalen Ethikrat gewesen sein müssen, zeigt die Tatsache, dass das Gremium zwei gegensätzliche Erklärungen zur Forschung mit humanen embryonalen Stammzellen (HES) präsentierte - und eine Einzelstimme obendrein: Eine knappe Mehrheit spricht sich für eine Novellierung des Stammzellgesetzes aus, in dem künftig auf die Stichtagsregelung verzichtet werden soll. Eine Minderheit sieht in dieser Empfehlung hingegen eine "Aushöhlung des ethisch-moralischen Fundaments des Stammzellgesetzes" - ethisch widersprüchlich und der Öffentlichkeit kaum vermittelbar, urteilen sie. Ratsmitglied Nummer 24 scherte ganz aus. Die Aufgabe der Expertenrunde war es, Regierung und Bundestag zu einer möglichen Änderung der umstrittenen Stichtagsregelung zu beraten. Diese verbietet Forschung an HES, die nach dem 1. Januar 2002 gewonnen worden sind. Die "Stellungnahme zum Stammzellgesetz" ist der letzte Ratschlag der bisherigen Ethikrunde an die Politik, bevor - mutmaßlich ab 1. August - ein neues Gremium an seine Stelle treten wird. Der damalige Bundeskanzler Gerhard Schröder (SPD) hatte im Jahr 2001 den Nationalen Ethikrat ohne gesetzliche Grundlage und am Bundestag vorbei für die Politikberatung in heiklen Fragen von Medizin und Biotechnologie berufen. Entsprechend unklar war der Status der Expertenrunde - und ist auch die heute veröffentlichte Stellungnahme. Demnächst solle sie Bundeskanzlerin Angela Merkel (CDU) übergeben werden, hieß es bei der Vorstellung in Berlin. (...)

Hormonpräparate gegen Wechseljahresbeschwerden tragen nachweislich zum Tumorwachstum bei. Neue Statistiken belegen einen eindeutigen Zusammenhang.

Vor fünf Jahren trat in der amerikanischen Krebsstatistik eine merkwürdige Veränderung auf: Bis dato war die Zahl der Brustkrebskranken Jahr für Jahr um 0,5 Prozent gestiegen. Doch plötzlich, zwischen 2002 und 2003, rutschten die Zahlen schlagartig nach unten. Das gleiche Phänomen zeigt sich auch in Deutschland: Im selben Zeitraum verzeichneten die beiden deutschen Krebsregister im Saarland und in Schleswig-Holstein einen abrupten Rückgang. Danach blieben die Diagnosezahlen konstant.

Die Lösung dieses Rätsels präsentierten US-Forscher um Donald Berry erst vor drei Monaten im New England Journal of Medicine. Offenbar hatte eine beliebte medizinische Maßnahme der neunziger Jahre den Frauen zuvor ein zusätzliches Krebsrisiko aufgebürdet: Massenhaft waren Frauen nach der Menopause mit Hormonpräparaten behandelt worden – vor allem wegen Beschwerden in den Wechseljahren, aber auch um eine Osteoporose zu bessern oder der Knochenerweichung vorzubeugen. Schon damals schwelte der Verdacht, dass die Hormongabe dem Brustkrebs Vorschub leisten könnte. Sowohl die Pharmaindustrie als auch die gynäkologischen Fachgesellschaften stritten dies jedoch mit Nachdruck ab. Erst als der Bericht der Women’s Health Initiative klare Indizien für ein erhöhtes Krebsrisiko geliefert hatte, fiel die Zahl der Hormonverordnungen drastisch, in den Vereinigten Staaten um 20 Millionen – ein Minus von fast 40 Prozent –, in Deutschland um ein Drittel.

Inzwischen kann die krebsfördernde Wirkung der Hormonersatztherapie praktisch als bewiesen gelten, folgern die US-Mediziner: Bei Frauen über 50 habe man fast 12 Prozent weniger Neuerkrankungen registriert, seit seltener Hormone verschrieben werden. Bei jüngeren Frauen dagegen, die praktisch nie mit Hormonen behandelt werden, änderte sich die Zahl der Erkrankungen kaum. Bei hormonsensitiven Brustkrebsfällen fiel der Rückgang mit rund 15 Prozent sogar noch drastischer aus, während Hormon-unempfindliche Krebse nur geringfügig abnahmen. Alle anderen denkbaren Ursachen für den plötzlichen Wandel seien mittlerweile ausgeschlossen.(...)

Neuer Doping-Schock im Radsport: Nach den positiven Tests von Matthias Kessler vor der Tour de France wurde nun bei T-Mobile-Fahrer Patrik Sinkewitz bei einer Trainingskontrolle ein erhöhter Testosteronwert festgestellt.

T-Mobile-Fahrer Patrik Sinkewitz ist bei einer Trainingskontrolle am 8. Juni positiv auf Doping getestet worden. Dies gab der Bund Deutscher Radfahrer (BDR) am Mittwoch bekannt. Der BDR war von der Nationalen Anti-Doping-Agentur Nada über den positiven Analysebefund mit dem erhöhten Testosteronwert informiert worden.

Sinkewitz wird nach seinem Unfall bei der Tour de France in einem Hamburger Krankenhaus behandelt. Der 26-Jährige war am Sonntag mit einem Zuschauer zusammengestoßen und hatte sich schwere Gesichtsverletzungen zugezogen.

Sinkewitz muss nun innerhalb von fünf Tagen erklären, ob er die Öffnung der B-Probe beantragen will. „Sollte die BProbe den positiven Befund bestätigen, wird der BDR die Einleitung eines Verfahrens beim Bundessportgericht beantragen und Patrik Sinkewitz aus allen Kadern streichen“, erklärte der Verband in seiner Pressemitteilung.

Nach der Affäre um die Toursieger Jan Ullrich und Bjarne Riis aus Dänemark hat das T-Mobile-Team sich dem Anti-Doping-Kampf verschrieben. Die positive A-Probe ist ein schwerer Schlag für das Team.

President George Bush flew into a US airbase in Anbar province in western Iraq yesterday to announce that recent American military successes would allow a reduction in the 160,000-strong US force in Iraq. He said that, judging by what he had been told by US commander General David Petraeus and ambassador Ryan Crocker, "it will be possible to maintain the same level of security with fewer American forces." Mr Bush chose to visit Anbar because the split between the Sunni tribes and al-Qai'da in Iraq has led to a sharp reduction in attacks on US forces in this vast western province which is mostly desert aside from the Euphrates valley. The administration has had some success in persuading US public opinion and media that the military escalation known as "the surge" which started in February is having a measure of success. Gen Petraeus and Mr Crocker are to report on the impact of "the surge" when they testify to Congress on 10 September. Since they will be reporting on their own efforts it is likely they will report significant progress. (...)

Machte die Aktiengesellschaft 2004 erst vier Prozent ihrer Umsätze im Ausland, waren es 2005 schon fünfeinhalb Prozent, und im vergangen Jahr ist man bei fast zwölf Prozent angelangt. "In diesem Jahr sollen es auf der Basis des geplanten Umsatzes von 200 Millionen Euro bereits 30 Prozent sein", prognostiziert Andreas Hänel, Vorstandsvorsitzender des bayerischen Photovoltaik-Systemhauses. Die US-Investmentbank Merrill Lynch hat sich nach einem Rekordverlust wegen der Finanzkrise von ihrem Chef Stan O'Neal getrennt und damit tagelangen Spekulationen um dessen Zukunft ein Ende gesetzt. Einen Nachfolger hat Merrill Lynch noch nicht in Petto - und das gefiel den Aktionären gar nicht.

Die Merrill-Papiere verloren an der Wall Street fast fünf Prozent auf 64,49 Dollar. Der 56-jährige O'Neal soll in seiner ehemaligen Funktion als Direktoriumschef interimsmäßig von Alberto Cribiore ersetzt werden, wie Merrill Lynch am Dienstag in New York mitteilte. Der 39-jährige gebürtige Israeli Agassi hat hehre Pläne: Mit einem Netz von Wartungsstationen für Elektroautos, bei denen leere Antriebs-Batterien gegen volle getauscht werden können, will er rein elektrisch betriebenen Fahrzeugen weltweit zum Durchbruch verhelfen. Der Clou dabei: Die Batterien für Elektroautos sollen so standardisiert werden, dass sie in Fahrzeugen unterschiedlicher Hersteller eingesetzt werden können.
